Blandy’s, established in 1811, is the leading producer of premium quality Madeira and is still owned and managed by direct descendants of the founder, John Blandy.
This happened in a small village called ‘Vermiosa’, a remote yet magical corner of the Iberian Peninsula, between the Upper Douro and Beira Alta - my family’s heartland - near the border with Spain.
The winemaking heritage of this region is one of the hidden treasures of Portuguese Wines. Here we find old vines of native grape varieties perfectly adapted to the rugged climate caused by the high altitude, along with the soil, where many veins of quartz run through the schist and granite.
