Porto came first out of 20 top European cities, beating Rome, Barcelona, Berlin, London and Paris. Zagreb came in 2nd and Vienna in 3rd place.
Porto managed to glean 15% of the share out of an incredible 228,000 online votes, between the 22nd of January and the 12th of February, via the European Consumers Choice official website. The organization is Brussels based and they annually promote this competition which is considered to be the largest e-tourism event in Europe.
With this distinction, and the official trophy, Porto wins an updated online guide on the European Consumers Choice website, available in English and French.
The city of Porto is well known and loved by its visitors for its food, Port wine and history, stunning scenery along the River Douro, for its original monuments, and also for its vibrant cultural life. The Brussels Organization further defended the victory by adding that Porto’s tourism will continue its trend to rise as a result of this award, underlining its authenticity as one of the key ingredients for its success. This award serves to further strengthen Porto’s position in European tourism.
Also in the top 10 was Madeira, which came in 6th place, further promoting Portugal abroad.
