João Nicolau de Almeida began his professional path in 1976 at Casa Ramos Pinto, where he developed a series of scientific studies that revolutionized the approach to winemaking in the Douro region.
At the same time, he begins the construction process of Quinta do Monte Xisto, together with his children, Mateus, João and Mafalda. Located in the Douro demarcated region, more precisely in the Douro Superior sub-region, Vila Nova de Foz Côa, the Quinta today has a total area of 55ha, 10ha of vines in organic farming since its planting. They work in a continuous process of study and learning, seeking to achieve a natural dynamic of needs.
After the vinification made in V.N. from Foz Côa the wines are transported to the Gaia Cellars where they are aged, bottled and shipped. The Mediterranean microclimate of the Douro contrasts with the Atlantic climate of Gaia with the ideal natural conditions of temperature and humidity for the aging of wines.
